Two of the most evocative pieces for violin and piano in one concert! Dramatic, dark Violin Sonata in F minor by Sergei Prokofiev was initiated in 1938, in the full swing of Stalin’s “great terror” and completed in 1946, just after the conclusion of WW2. Haunting and vicious at times, with passages descriptive of “wind passing through graveyard” and grand battles, this unforgettable piece precedes the sweepingly romantic Violin Sonata in A Major by César Franck. “Wondrous and alone”, pulsating with passionate harmonies and unwinding like an epic journey, this piece was a wedding gift of the composer to another composer and violinist Eugene Ysaïe. Ever since the first performance at Ysaïe’s wedding in 1886, the Sonata won the audience’s hearts for its rich beauty. This Duo Dramatique recital is an event not to be missed.
