Stanley Gazdyszyn peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family at the age of 90 on Saturday, October 21, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that will forever warm the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Known to everyone as Stasiu or Staszek, he was born in Lwów, Poland, a city that now lies within the borders of Ukraine. He was the youngest of five boys of Stefan Artemij Gazdyszyn and Anna Kurczak, who preceded him in death.
Throughout his life, Stanley was a beacon of resilience, overcoming the hardships of surviving World War II. His strength of character, kindness, and love for life saw him through the darkest of days. He was a loving son, brother, and uncle, who cherished his family deeply. Stanley’s memory will forever be intertwined with his brothers, Michał Gazdyszyn, Eugeniusz Gazdyszyn, Jarosław Gazdyszyn, and Władislaw Gazdyszyn, who preceded him in death.
Stanley was not only a survivor but a true master of his craft. He was a gifted carpenter who crafted exquisite furniture pieces and intricate theater sets, leaving a lasting mark on the world with his skilled hands and keen eye. He was known for his unwavering love for the outdoors, whether he was fishing or basking in the tranquility of being on the water. He cherished trips to the casino, engaging in spirited card games with his beloved brothers and family, and taking to the dance floor with grace. His heart was forever attuned to the melodies of classical music and the songs that spoke of his cherished birthplace, Lwów.
In 1981, Stanley, along with his family, embarked on a new chapter of their lives, immigrating to Houston, Texas. This journey was emblematic of Stanley’s spirit, a testament to his adventurous and open-hearted nature. He worked at the F.W. Gartner Co. in the thermal spraying department for 18 years before retiring in 1998. He also actively participated in the establishment of Our Lady of Czestochowa Polish Catholic church in Houston, where he dedicated his time as a volunteer. His love for travel led him to explore new places and create cherished memories with his family.
Stanley was a dedicated and talented craftsman in more ways than one. He built his own home, demonstrating his ingenuity, determination, and deep connection to his surroundings. His generosity knew no bounds, and he had a heart of gold. Stanley found immense joy in helping others and building connections. He never met a stranger, and his ability to strike up conversations and make new friends was one of his most endearing qualities.
Stanley Gazdyszyn is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Alina, and his daughter, Lidia Zatopek, along with his son-in-law, Carl Zatopek. He is also remembered by a host of extended family members and friends who were touched by his kind spirit, warm presence, and wonderful sense of humor. Stasiu will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared with all those fortunate enough to have known him.
In honoring Stanley’s memory, may we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit continues to shine in our hearts, reminding us to embrace life, seek adventure, and extend a helping hand to all those we meet.
