“Requiem for the Living” Celebrating United Nations’ International Day of Tolerance

Dear Friends,

Axiom Quartet is excited to invite you to a very special concert on this Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 7.30PM at South Main Baptist Church.

This special Gala Concert is hosted by Arts of Tolerance in collaboration with Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance at Rice University, and it is presented to honor the United Nations’ International Day of Tolerance.

Three stirring works will be performed:
Arthur Gottschalk’s “Litany” for string quartet, choir and piano, with Axiom Quartet, Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale and John Cornelius on the piano, conducted by Karl Blench,
“Gospel According to John Coltrane” by Paul English, with the composer and Paul English Jazz Quartet,
and finally the monumental “Requiem for the Living” by Arthur Gottschalk will unite some 150 musicians on stage, giving the United States premiere of this masterpiece. Embracing people and beliefs from almost all parts of the world, Gottschalk commemorates Western music—quoting many genres from its history, from Renaissance madrigals and Classical sonatas to jazz, pop, and blue— while honoring Western and Eastern thought, innovation, and art.

This concert is truly a meaningful opportunity to experience moving music by local, internationally renowned composers and to support the ever-important cause of tolerance. We hope to see many of you there!
